BOYS NOIZE - STARTER (Hi-Def)

My entry for the Boys Noize EMPOWER yourself visuals competition, enjoy! www.nealcoghlan.co.uk See stills here www.flickr.com For the look and style of the video I wanted to keep it quite similar in appearance to the aesthetic of much of the artwork produced for releases through Boys Noize Records - basically the bold shapes, strong primary colours and often aggressive lines. The artwork for the Starter EP was a great starting point as this was so easy to translate into a moving visual - and from there create other visuals that followed suit. A lot of the reference material I used included bits of machinery including photos from museums and schematics for various electrical devices. I've always been a fan of simple moving geomterical works as well, and from this piece I think that love of basic shapes (especially circles) has come across pretty well. All the stills were created in illustrator and then placed in After Effects and animated. Some of the shots were painstakingly separated into individual pieces and manually keyframed, most of them to fit elements of sound in the track ie a drum beat or a stabbing synth. When I set the brief originally within my department, I had a strict set of guidelines such as only 2 colours (in the animation 1 section uses black as this was a guideline set by the artist for the competition), no transparency, no motion blur, no 3D. All of it was to be bold 2D graphics. Big thanks to: Steve, Luiza, Harry, David and Tiago for helping with ...
